Terry Allen Mathews - Class of 1983

Terry Alan Mathews – Class of 1983
Major League Baseball Pitcher | Mentor | Community Leader
Terry Mathews, a 1983 graduate of Holy Savior Menard Central High School, was one of the school’s most accomplished athletes. His outstanding performance in baseball earned him numerous awards and honors, and in recognition of his achievements, his Menard jersey was retired on February 7, 1987—a rare and special tribute to his impact on the program.
Continuing his baseball journey at Northeast Louisiana University (now UL–Monroe), Terry excelled both as a leader and a player. He won the Hitting Award four consecutive years (1984–1987), was elected Team Captain in 1987, and earned the honor of Pelican Cup Series MVP that same year. His collegiate excellence was later recognized when he was inducted into the NLU Hall of Fame in 1996.
Terry’s professional career spanned from 1987 to 2000, during which he pitched for the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Florida Marlins, Baltimore Orioles, and Kansas City Royals. Known as a reliable relief pitcher, he appeared in more than 300 Major League games, recording wins, saves, and key innings for each team he represented.
After retiring from professional baseball in 2000, Terry returned to Alexandria and continued to pour his passion into the sport and his community. He volunteered as a baseball coach at Menard, mentoring young athletes not only in the fundamentals of the game but also in life. In 2008, Terry joined the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, serving faithfully as Menard’s School Resource Officer (SRO) until his passing in 2012.
Terry’s legacy endures as that of a gifted athlete, dedicated coach, and role model whose influence reached far beyond the baseball field. His life reflected the values of faith, service, and commitment to others, making him a true embodiment of what it means to be a Distinguished Alumnus of Holy Savior Menard.
