The HSM English department seeks to assist students in the development of the reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills necessary for success in college and in life.  In doing so, the faculty promotes a shared responsibility of learning between the teacher and student.

Throughout the curriculum, students experience and appreciate a variety of literary genres that reflect both cultural and classical literary traditions. Yearly vocabulary studies, grammar lessons, and composition instruction provide the knowledge for effective written and spoken communication necessary for the workforce.  By the time they graduate, students are able to evaluate a text critically and perform the type of research required in college.
