School Scholarship Program for Educational Excellence
As you may have heard by now, Governor Jindal recently signed House Bill 976 into law, providing tuition assistance for children of low-income families to attend participating private schools. Under the new law, students entering kindergarten or those who attend a public school graded C, D, or F, and have a household income that does not exceed 250% of the federal poverty level, will be eligible to participate. If you would like more information, please call (866)402-9947 or email LouisianaInquiry@federationforchildren.org.
(UPDATE) The following information should help answer some of your questions regarding Menard's participation in the School Scholarship Program for Educational Excellence (also called the Louisiana State Scholarship Program, or commonly referred to as the "voucher" program) and will hopefully correct any misconceptions about the program.
-
Menard's first goal is to ensure that current HSM students who may qualify for this program receive assistance. Besides financial criteria, the student must have also attended an academically unacceptable school during the 2010-2011 school year. This makes some students who attended Menard in 2011-2012 (the recently ended academic year) eligible. The HSM administration has already identified these students and asked them to apply for the program.
-
Our next goal is to direct all eligible students who have already preregistered at Menard for 2012-2013 (the upcomic academic year) towards the scholarship program.
-
Lastly, the HSM administration submitted a school profile to state authorities indicating that Menard follows a college preperatory curriculum and does not offer special education services. This action was actually required by the state, so that qualifying students may be admitted to schools best able to meet each child's individual needs. This means that the students who receive state scholarships to Menard should be of stronger academic character. Additionally, students who attend Menard on state scholarships must, like all other HSM students, abide by all HSM policies (uniform, discipline, etc.) or face dismissal.
